A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. The medical term for a bunion is hallux valgus; the bump develops on the joint where the big toe meets the foot. Bunions form when pressure pushes the big toe out of its natural alignment and toward the other toes; this slow shift can change the shape of the foot over many years. This problem is common; experts estimate that around one-third of adults have at least one bunion that affects how they move. This article explains what bunions are, how they form, and how they affect daily activities such as walking, wearing shoes, and completing routine tasks.

    Understanding Bunions

Bunions form on the joint where the big toe meets the foot. The joint sticks out and becomes enlarged; the big toe drifts toward the smaller toes. Although some people are born with bunions, others develop them during childhood or adulthood, and the way the toe shifts over time can change the entire shape of the front of the foot. The bump appears on the inside edge of the big toe joint, so it is usually easy to see and feel. Some people notice changes early, but others recognize the condition later as the toe position shifts further. Because the structure of the foot changes over time and pressure continues to act on the joint, the bunion may gradually become more noticeable.

    Recognizing the Symptoms

The most obvious symptom is the bump itself. The bump can bring pain, swelling, redness, and stiffness in the big toe. Because the toe shifts out of place, people may struggle to move or bend it; they may feel pain or a burning sensation during movement.

Pain often increases with activity; standing or walking for long periods can make the discomfort worse. Thickened skin, such as corns or calluses, can form on the affected toe; the skin near the joint may become tender as pressure increases. Some people notice numbness around the big toe; symptoms often become more noticeable when footwear adds pressure to the area.

    Identifying Causes and Daily Effects

Several factors are associated with bunions. Tight or pointed shoes, foot mechanics, foot injuries, and conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can all play a role. Because family history matters too, the risk increases when a biological parent has had bunions; repeated pressure on the joint over time can also contribute to the development.

These changes affect everyday life in clear ways. Walking becomes harder when pain increases during activity; simple steps may feel uncomfortable. Narrow shoes crowd the toes and add pressure, while standing or working on the feet can increase soreness throughout the day, especially when movement continues for long periods.

Routine tasks slow down when the toe will not bend. A bunion can grow larger over time if it goes untreated; this progression may make shoe fitting more difficult as the joint becomes more prominent. Daily movement becomes less comfortable when pressure continues on the affected area.

A provider can diagnose a bunion through a physical exam and questions about symptoms. X-rays show the alignment of the bones and the joint; they help the provider evaluate the condition. Treatment depends on the size and the symptoms; options may include wider shoes, bunion pads, orthotic inserts, taping, icing, and pain relievers. When other treatments fail to relieve pain or walking remains difficult, a provider may suggest physical therapy with exercises or stretches, and surgery can become an option for persistent symptoms.

    Manage Bunions Early

Bunions change the way many people move through their days. The bony bump brings pain and stiffness, and the big toe loses some of its movement during walking and other tasks. Tight shoes, foot mechanics, and family history all raise the risk, and pressure on the joint contributes to changes over time. A provider can diagnose the condition with an exam and X-rays, and treatment can range from wider shoes and bunion pads to surgery. Early care helps people manage symptoms before they worsen, and timely treatment can support daily comfort and mobility. People who notice foot pain, swelling, or a bump near the big toe can see a provider to address symptoms and protect daily movement.
